How Much Does It Cost to Build a Mobile App in India in 2026? A Practical Founder’s Guide

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Mobile App in India in 2026?

You have an app idea.

Maybe it is a booking platform for your business. Maybe you want customers to order directly from you. Maybe it is an education app, marketplace, internal employee app, or a startup idea you have been thinking about for months.

Then comes the question almost every founder asks:

“How much will it cost to build?”

And this is where things get confusing.

One developer may quote ₹2 lakh. Another agency may quote ₹8 lakh. Someone else may say the same app could cost ₹20 lakh or more.

So why are the numbers so different?

Because two apps that look similar on the surface can be completely different behind the scenes.

QUICK ANSWER

For initial planning in India in 2026, mobile app development can broadly fall into these ranges:

• Simple app or MVP: ₹1.5 lakh – ₹5 lakh • Medium-complexity app: ₹5 lakh – ₹15 lakh • Complex app or platform: ₹15 lakh – ₹40 lakh+

These are broad estimates — not fixed prices. The actual cost depends on what your app needs to do.

THE BETTER QUESTION TO ASK

Instead of asking:

“How much does an app cost?”

Ask:

“What does the first useful version of my app actually need?”

That one change in thinking can save a startup a surprising amount of money.

WHY CAN TWO APP QUOTES BE SO DIFFERENT?

Imagine two businesses.

Business A wants customers to:

• Create an account • View services • Choose a service • Submit a booking request • Receive a confirmation

Now imagine Business B.

Their customers need to:

• Create an account • Search nearby service providers • Check live availability • Book instantly • Make online payments • Track the provider on a map • Chat in real time • Apply coupons • Rate the service • View booking history

Both businesses might simply say:

“We need a booking app.”

But technically, these are two very different products.

The second system needs payments, maps, real-time updates, user permissions, notifications, backend infrastructure, databases, admin controls and much more.

That is why app development cannot be priced based only on the number of screens.

1. SIMPLE APP OR MVP

Estimated budget: ₹1.5 lakh – ₹5 lakh

Typical development time: Around 6–12 weeks depending on scope.

A simple mobile app normally focuses on solving one clear problem.

Examples include:

• Basic appointment apps • Business catalogue apps • Internal employee apps • Simple education apps • Customer enquiry apps • Startup MVPs

A simple app may contain:

• Login or registration • Basic user profiles • Forms • A few important screens • Simple database functionality • Basic push notifications • Standard UI design

For many startups, this is actually the best place to begin.

WHAT IS AN MVP?

MVP stands for Minimum Viable Product.

That sounds technical, but the idea is simple.

An MVP is the smallest useful version of your product that people can actually use. It is not supposed to contain every feature you can imagine.

Its purpose is to answer one important question:

“Do people actually want this product?”

For example, instead of building a food delivery platform with 50 features, version one could focus on:

Restaurant discovery ↓ Food selection ↓ Order placement ↓ Payment ↓ Order confirmation

Once real customers start using it, you can learn what needs to be improved.

2. MEDIUM-COMPLEXITY MOBILE APP

Estimated budget: ₹5 lakh – ₹15 lakh

Typical development time: Around 3–6 months.

This is where many real business applications fall.

The app might include:

• User registration • Profiles • Online payments • Push notifications • Search and filters • Custom backend • Admin dashboard • Multiple user roles • Analytics • Booking or order management • Third-party integrations

Common examples include:

• E-commerce apps • Service-booking platforms • Education apps • Healthcare appointment apps • Membership platforms • Delivery applications

At this stage, you are not simply building a mobile application. You are building an entire digital system around it.

3. COMPLEX MOBILE APP OR DIGITAL PLATFORM

Estimated budget: ₹15 lakh – ₹40 lakh+

Typical development time: Six months or longer in many cases.

Now think about platforms such as:

• Ride booking • Large marketplaces • Fintech applications • Delivery networks • Multi-vendor platforms • Large SaaS products

These may require:

• Customer application • Service-provider application • Admin dashboard • Live GPS tracking • Real-time updates • Payments • Wallet functionality • Chat • Advanced notifications • Multiple APIs • Complex permissions • Analytics • Automated workflows • AI-powered features

At this point, what looks like “one app” is actually several interconnected systems.

WHAT REALLY AFFECTS APP DEVELOPMENT COST?

There are a few major factors that decide whether your app stays affordable or becomes expensive.

1. FEATURE COMPLEXITY

A page that simply displays information is relatively easy to build.

Now compare that with a screen that:

• Checks the user's location • Finds nearby providers • Calculates distance • Calculates a price • Processes payment • Sends notifications • Updates another user's screen in real time

That is far more complex.

Features that usually increase development effort include:

• GPS and maps • Live tracking • Online payments • Chat • Video calling • Subscription systems • Multiple account types • Offline functionality • Advanced search • AI integrations • External APIs • Analytics

A simple rule:

The more systems that need to communicate with each other, the more development work is required.

2. ANDROID, IOS OR BOTH?

You also need to decide where your users are.

You may build:

• Android only • iOS only • Android + iOS

For many businesses, building for both platforms makes sense.

Frameworks such as Flutter and React Native allow developers to share a large portion of the code between Android and iOS.

This can make cross-platform development more practical for many startups.

But cross-platform is not automatically the right choice for every app.

Some products with highly specialised hardware or platform-specific functionality may still benefit from native development.

Technology should be selected according to the product — not because a particular framework is fashionable.

3. UI/UX DESIGN

Many founders think design simply means:

“What colour should the button be?”

Good product design goes much deeper.

Before development starts, someone should think about:

• What happens when a new user opens the app? • What is the first thing they should do? • Can they understand the interface without instructions? • What happens when something goes wrong? • What happens on a slow internet connection? • What happens while data is loading? • Can users complete the main task quickly?

That is UI/UX design.

Good design reduces confusion and can also reduce expensive changes later during development.

4. THE BACKEND

The backend is the part users normally never see.

Suppose a customer taps:

“Book Now”

It looks like one simple button.

But behind that button, the system may need to:

• Verify the user • Check availability • Calculate pricing • Create the booking • Process payment • Store the transaction • Notify another user • Update the admin dashboard • Send confirmation • Handle cancellation rules

The customer sees one button.

The development team sees an entire workflow.

For many applications, the backend is one of the biggest parts of the project.

5. ADMIN DASHBOARD

A business also needs a way to control what is happening inside the app.

An admin dashboard might allow your team to:

• Manage users • View bookings • Manage orders • Approve requests • Update content • Create offers • Handle refunds • View reports • Manage permissions • Respond to customer issues

This is often forgotten while discussing app development costs.

Always ask whether an admin dashboard is included in the quotation.

6. THIRD-PARTY INTEGRATIONS

Modern apps rarely work completely on their own.

Your application may need to connect with:

• Payment gateways • WhatsApp • SMS services • Email platforms • Google Maps • CRM systems • ERP software • Analytics tools • Cloud storage • Authentication services • AI services

Some integrations are simple.

Others require additional development, security work and testing.

Many also have separate monthly or usage-based charges.

THE CHEAPEST QUOTE CAN BECOME THE MOST EXPENSIVE

Imagine you receive two quotations.

Quotation A: ₹2 lakh

Quotation B: ₹5 lakh

Naturally, ₹2 lakh looks attractive.

But before choosing, ask what is actually included.

Does the quotation include:

• UI/UX design? • Android and iOS? • Backend development? • Admin dashboard? • Source code? • Testing? • Payment gateway integration? • Server configuration? • Play Store submission? • App Store submission? • Bug support? • Documentation? • Security? • Maintenance?

Sometimes the cheaper quotation is cheaper simply because half of the required work is not included.

Compare scope — not just price.

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE APP DEVELOPMENT COST?

You do not always need to find a cheaper developer.

Often, the smarter approach is reducing unnecessary complexity.

Start with one important problem.

Ask:

“What is the main reason somebody will use this app?”

Build that part first.

Separate features into two lists:

MUST HAVE

Features required for the first usable version.

NICE TO HAVE

Features that can be introduced later.

For example:

VERSION 1

• Login • Search • Booking • Payment • Confirmation

VERSION 2

• Wallet • Referral programme • Loyalty points • Advanced analytics • AI recommendations

This approach can dramatically reduce your initial investment.

DO NOT BUILD FOR 10 MILLION USERS ON DAY ONE

Your architecture should be capable of growing.

But your spending should still match the current stage of your business.

If your immediate goal is reaching your first 500 customers, you probably do not need every infrastructure component required by a company serving 50 million people.

Build intelligently.

Then scale when the data tells you to scale.

PLAN BEFORE YOU CODE

One of the simplest ways to reduce development cost is planning properly.

Changing a workflow while it is still a diagram is easy.

Changing the same workflow after the following have already been completed can become expensive:

• Database development • Backend APIs • Mobile screens • Admin functionality

Planning is not wasted time.

Planning is part of development.

WHAT SHOULD YOU PREPARE BEFORE ASKING FOR A QUOTATION?

You do not need to prepare a 100-page technical document.

Start with simple answers:

1. Who will use the application? 2. What problem will it solve? 3. What is the main action users should perform? 4. Will there be different types of users? 5. Will users make payments? 6. Does the app require GPS or maps? 7. Do you need an admin dashboard? 8. Do you need Android, iOS or both? 9. Does the app need to connect with another system? 10. Which features are essential for version one?

Even a one-page document containing these answers can make the first development discussion significantly more productive.

“HOW MUCH WILL AN APP LIKE UBER OR AMAZON COST?”

This is another question development companies hear frequently.

But platforms such as Uber, Amazon or Zomato are not simply mobile apps.

They are enormous technology ecosystems built over many years.

They contain:

• Multiple applications • Huge backend infrastructure • Payment systems • Analytics • Security systems • Internal dashboards • Customer support systems • Automation • Large engineering teams

Therefore, rather than asking:

“How much does it cost to build another Uber?”

A better question is:

“What is the smallest version of this idea that proves the business model?”

For example, an early mobility platform might initially require:

Customer app + Driver app + Admin panel + Booking + Payments + Location tracking

It does not necessarily need every feature a global company has developed over the last decade.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE APP IS LAUNCHED?

Launching your app is not the finish line.

Software needs continued attention.

After launch, you may need:

• Bug fixes • Android updates • iOS updates • Security patches • Server monitoring • Performance improvements • New features • API updates • Store compliance changes • Analytics improvements

Think of your app as a product that grows over time, not as a file that is delivered once and forgotten.

A SIMPLE EXAMPLE

Imagine you have ₹5 lakh available for your startup.

You have two choices.

OPTION A

Spend the entire budget building:

• 40 features • Advanced analytics • Loyalty programme • Referral system • Wallet • AI recommendation engine • Complex dashboards

All of this is built before a single customer has used the product.

OPTION B

Build:

• Registration • Core service • Booking • Payment • Basic admin dashboard

Then launch it.

Get your first users.

Watch how they use it.

Then spend the remaining budget improving what customers actually need.

In most cases, Option B gives you much more useful information.

Real users are better product advisers than assumptions.

HOW WE THINK ABOUT APP DEVELOPMENT AT ALOGYAN

At Alogyan, we believe the first discussion about a mobile app should not begin with:

“Which technology should we use?”

It should begin with:

“What problem are we trying to solve?”

Think about:

• Who is struggling with something today? • What process is too slow? • What is currently being done manually? • What experience can be made easier? • What will users genuinely gain from the product?

Only after those questions become clear should technology enter the discussion.

Sometimes the correct solution is a mobile app.

Sometimes a web application makes more sense.

Sometimes automating an existing process creates more value than building another app.

Choosing the right solution before development starts can save months of work.

SO, HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU BUDGET?

For initial planning in India in 2026:

SIMPLE APP / MVP

₹1.5 lakh – ₹5 lakh

Best suited for:

• Early startup ideas • Basic business apps • MVP testing • Simple internal applications

MEDIUM-COMPLEXITY APP

₹5 lakh – ₹15 lakh

Best suited for:

• E-commerce • Booking systems • Payment-enabled apps • Apps with custom backend • Multi-user applications

COMPLEX PLATFORM

₹15 lakh – ₹40 lakh+

Best suited for:

• Marketplaces • Real-time platforms • Multi-application ecosystems • Advanced business systems • High-complexity integrations

But remember:

No responsible development company can provide an accurate final quotation from only:

“I need an app.”

A proper estimate comes after understanding the users, features, workflows, integrations and expected scale.

FINAL THOUGHT The most expensive app is not necessarily the app with the highest quotation. The most expensive app is the one that takes months to build and solves a problem nobody needed solved.

Start smaller. Understand your users. Build the important part first. Launch. Measure. Improve.

That is how useful digital products are built.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does a basic mobile app cost in India? A relatively simple mobile application can broadly start around ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh depending on design, backend requirements, features and platform support.

How long does mobile app development take? A basic MVP may take around 6–12 weeks. Medium-complexity apps usually require several months, while complex platforms may take six months or longer.

Is Flutter cheaper than native development? For many applications that require both Android and iOS, Flutter can reduce duplicated development work by allowing much of the app to use a shared codebase. Whether it is the best option depends on the project.

Should a startup build Android and iOS together? Not always. It depends on where your target users are.

Some startups can validate their product on one platform first, while others need both platforms from launch.

Can I add more features after launching an MVP?

Yes.

In fact, that is one of the main reasons to build an MVP.

Launch the essential product first, learn from real users and then prioritise future features.

Does mobile app development include maintenance?

Not necessarily. Maintenance may be included for a limited period or offered separately. Always clarify post-launch support before beginning the project.
